Summertime and the livin’s easy

A breezy summer day calls for some easy afternoon activities – and exploring the thrift shops in the Adelaide Hills is a perfect fit. Here are some of the things we found during our time at the Balhannah Op-Shop over the weekend. Being festival season in Adelaide it is the perfect time to explore and experiment with your outfits with so many outing opportunities!

The royal blue pleated skirt ($3.50) reminded me so strongly of the Dior Cruise 2012 collection that I had no choice but to pair it with an aqua summer top, as we in the south of Australia try desperately to hold on to any remaining summer warmth. The colour blocking easily blends second hand with trend based fashion – you would never know that the outfit was completed for under $20!

The black velvet dress ($7.00) I picked out for my sister was in the children’s section but was way too sexy for any kids! Tight, yet falling just below the knee, the neck detail was a charming suprise to a 90s punk inspired number – perfect for grunge souls and stylish wonders alike. We know velvet has slowly been creeping back on to the fashion radar and now you can find it almost anywhere. In fact the catwalks of Milan have just delivered us the baroque inspired Dolce and Gabbana show, velvet showcased as an opulent option (and they are not the only ones my friends). I am squealing with delight at the possibilities of wearing velvet this winter (which is hard to say that being a product of the 90s), with lush floral prints or equestrian influences. For a super fresh look – hit up the accessories Midas style with really ornate gold.

As the weather outlook for the week looks dire my musings will take me in the direction of autumn and winter, and I will be saving the beautiful pleated skirt for summers last hurrah (which I am hoping will be soon)!
